Today is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.

This Sunday, our Gospel focuses on the prayer that Jesus raises to the Father in the “Hour” of his exaltation and glorification. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: “Christian Tradition rightly calls this prayer the ‘priestly’ prayer of Jesus. It is the prayer of our High Priest, inseparable from his sacrifice, from his “passing over” (Passover) to the Father to whom he is wholly ‘consecrated’”.

To live no longer for ourselves but for Christ: this is what gives full meaning to the life of those who let themselves be conquered by him. This is clearly demonstrated by the human and spiritual life of St Benedict who, having abandoned all things, set out to follow Jesus Christ faithfully. Embodying the Gospel in his life, he became the pioneer of a vast movement of spiritual and cultural rebirth in the West. I would like here to mention an extraordinary event in his life related by St Gregory the Great, his biographer. One might almost say that the holy Patriarch was also "carried up into Heaven" in an indescribable mystic experience.

Today is the feast of St John of Ávila, Priest & Doctor.

Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.

Even a traditionally Catholic people can feel negatively or assimilate almost unconsciously the repercussions of a culture that ends by insinuating a mentality in which the Gospel message is openly rejected or subtly hindered. We must make a considerable effort to defend the eternal values of the Christian faith. We must be encouraged never to give in to the recurring temptations of the hedonistic culture and to the appeal of materialistic consumerism. Accept the invitation of the Apostle Peter, contained in today’s Second Reading, to conduct ourselves “with fear throughout the time of your exile” here below; an invitation that is put into practice by living intensely on the thoroughfares of our world in the awareness of the destination to be reached: unity with God, in the Crucified and Risen Christ.
