Statue of St Gianna Beretta Molla

For a long time, Corpus Christi has had a close connection with the Pro-Life movement. The Good Counsel Network, for example, has a monthly Mass at the Shrine. We are looking now to install a statue of St Gianna Beretta Molla, who refused to abort the child in her womb, in spite of knowing that this would cost her her own life.

There is a great need for heavenly assistance of this remarkable saint, especially as various politicians around the world push for laws and policies so inimical to protecting the lives of the most vulnerable (to find out more about St Gianna Molla, see the video at the bottom of this page).

We have therefore applied for, and received, permission to commission a statue of St Gianna Beretta Molla, which would stand on a plinth in front of the front column at the right hand side of the church, ie opposite the pulpit.

Proposed statue

There are obvious links between the sacrifice of St Gianna for her child, with the Sacrifice of Calvary for mankind represented on the Altar that could be made – indeed Pope St Paul VI referred to her death as “meditated immolation”. Moreover, it is worth noting that before the liturgical changes of 1955, the Mass of Corpus Christi used the Preface of the Nativity, making a direct link between the Incarnation at Bethlehem and the Blessed Sacrament.

The statue will be carved by Ferdinand Stuflesser in Italy, who also carved the statues of St Anthony, Our Lady of Walsingham, Padre Pio and St Jean Vianney, which can all be found around the Shrine. The final image will be a statue of St Gianna, holding her daughter in one hand, and surrounded by children embracing her. These are often known as ‘Gianna babies’, and represent the children whose births were attributed to her intercession.

We are looking to raise £18,000 to cover the costs of having this relief carved, shipped and installed and are asking for your generous donations towards this.

The names of benefactors will be remembered at a monthly Mass – usually on the second Thursday of the month – will be offered for their intentions.

Any donation, great or small, will be most graciously received.

If you are a UK tax payer, please Gift Aid your donation if you are able. Gift Aid allows us to claim 25% of your donation from the Government at no extra cost to you. So a donation of £100 becomes £125 just by signing a Gift Aid declaration. A Gift Aid form may be downloaded by clicking this link, or copies are available at the back of the church.
