Eucharistic Prayers & Devotions

The prayers below are offered to aid you in your devotions and as acts of reparation for sins against the Blessed Sacrament.

Spiritual Act of Communion

My Jesus, I most firmly believe that You are really present in the Blessed Sacrament. I place my whole confidence in You, and I love You above all things. Oh that I had never offended You! I ardently desire to be united to You, my loving Saviour, and never to be separated from You. What have I in heaven, and besides You what do I desire upon earth! Veni, Domine Jesu!

Act of Adoration I

1. I adore You profoundly in Your Sacrament, O Jesus ; I acknowledge You there as true God and true Man ; and I intend by this act of adoration to make amends for the coldness of so many Christians, who pass before Your churches, even, sometimes before Your tabernacle, where You dwell all hours in a loving impatience to communicate Yourself to Your faithful, and yet never so much as salute You, and by their indifference show themselves to be like those in the desert, sick of this heavenly manna; and I offer You the Most Precious Blood which You shed from the wound of Your Left Foot in reparation for such hateful coldness, within which wound I repeat a thousand times —

Blessed and praised every moment, be the Most Holy and Most Divine Sacrament!

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

2. I adore You profoundly, O my Jesus ; I acknowledge You present in the Most Holy Sacrament ; and I intend by this act of adoration to make amends for the ingratitude of so many Christians, who see You carried to the poor sick to be their comfort in the great journey of eternity, and yet leave You without escort, and scarcely make an act of outward adoration to You ; and I offer You, in reparation for such coldness, the Most Precious Blood which You shed from the wound of Your Right Foot, within which I repeat a thousand times —

Blessed and praised every moment, be the Most Holy and Most Divine Sacrament!

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

3. I adore You profoundly, O my Jesus, true Bread of Eternal life; and I intend by this adoration to make compensation for the many wounds which Your sacred Heart daily suffers in the profanation of churches, where You condescend to dwell under the sacramental species, to receive the love and adoration of Your faithful ; and I offer You, in reparation for all these irreverences, the Most Precious Blood which You shed from the wound of Your Left Hand, within which I repeat again and again —

Blessed and praised every moment, be the Most Holy and Most Divine Sacrament!

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

4. I adore You profoundly, O my Jesus, living Bread come down from Heaven ; and by this act of adoration I intend to make amends for the many irreverences which are daily committed by Your people when assisting at the Holy Mass, in which, through excess of love, You renew the same sacrifice, though bloodless, which You have already accomplished on Calvary for our salvation; and I offer You, in reparation for such great ingratitude, the Most Precious Blood which You  shed from the wound of Your Right Hand, within which I unite my voice to those of the Angels, who gather devoutly round You, and say with them —

Blessed and praised every moment, be the Most Holy and Most Divine Sacrament!

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

5. I adore You profoundly, O my Jesus, true Victim of expiation for our sins ; and I offer You this act of adoration in compensation for the sacrilegious outrages which You receive from so many ungrateful Christians, who dare to approach and receive Communion with mortal sin upon their souls. In reparation for such abominable sacrileges, I offer You the last drops your Most Precious Blood which You shed from the wound of Your Side, within which I come to adore You, to bless You, and to love You, and to repeat with all the souls devoted to the Most Holy Sacrament —

Blessed and praised every moment, be the Most Holy and Most Divine Sacrament!

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory be.

Act of Adoration II

I will take upon myself to speak to my Lord, although I am but dust and ashes. O my God! whose greatness is infinite, my mind and my soul have failed me while I recall Your infinite benefits. O God of my life, what praises and adoration worthy of You can I offer You? What shall I render to You, O You Whom I love above all? You in me, and I in You, O Jesus, my one good: this is the thank-offering I set before Your glory; my one only offering is what I am in You, my life in You.

Let all Your wonderful works, and all the gifts of Your bounty unto me, bless You, glorify You, and praise You for me, O God of my life. O God of my heart, dearest object of my desires, deign to grant that the feeble note which sings my worthless praise and thanksgiving, may mingle with the melody ever flowing from Your Sacred Heart. When, oh when! shall I be sweetly absorbed in You, You divine centre, and thus become, all unworthy as I am, one only love, one spirit with You?

Prayer to our Divine Lord

St Gertrude, having recited this prayer before Communion, sought to know what she had gained by it, and received this answer from Our Lord: “You have gained this, that you now appear before the inhabitants of Heaven arrayed in those ornaments which you asked of Me.”

O most loving Lord Jesus Christ, I beseech You, by all the love of Your sweetest Heart, that You would vouchsafe to offer for me all that perfection wherewith You did stand arrayed in the presence of God the Father when You did ascend on high to enter into Your glory; and through Your sinless and unspotted Manhood to render my polluted soul pure and free from every sin, and through Your most glorious Divinity to endow and adorn it with every virtue, and through the virtue of that love, which has for ever united Your supreme Divinity to Your immaculate Humanity, to furnish it befittingly with Your best gifts. Amen.

Prayer to St Sebastian against the Virus

Saint Sebastian, guard and defend us, morning and evening, every minute of every hour, and diminish the strength of that vile illness which is threatening us. We put our trust in God, in our Lady, and in you, holy martyr. Be with us always, and by your merits and prayers keep us safe and sound and protect us. Commend us to the Blessed Trinity, so that when we die we may have our everlasting reward: to behold God in the company of all the saints. Amen.

Prayer in a Time of Suffering

O Lord, Jesus Christ, I receive this sickness with which You are pleased to visit me, as coming from Your fatherly hand. It is Your will, and therefore I submit. “Not my will, but Yours be done.” May it be to the honour of Your holy Name, and for the good of my soul. I here offer myself with an entire submission to all Your appointments; to suffer whatever You please, as long as You please, and in what manner You please; for I am a creature, O Lord, who have often and most ungratefully offended You, and whom You might justly have visited with Your severest punishments. Oh, let Your justice be tempered with mercy, and let Your heavenly grace come to my assistance to support me under this affliction!

Confirm my soul with strength from above, that I may bear with true Christian patience all the uneasiness, pains, disquiets and troubles under which I labour; preserve me from all temptations and murmuring thoughts, that in this time of affliction I may in no way offend You; and grant that this and all other earthly trials may be the means of preparing my soul for its passage into eternity, that, being purified from all my sins, I may believe in You, hope in You, love You above all things, and finally, through Your infinite merits, be admitted into the company of the blessed in Heaven, there to praise You for ever and ever. Amen.

Act of Love

O sweetest Jesus, I offer You all the love of my heart, in choosing You for my companion and guide. I offer You my body and soul to be employed in Your service alone and evermore. Oh! that I could love You as You love me. Oh! that I could humble myself as You humbled Yourself, to be able to honour and serve You, as You deserve. Joy and gladness be to You, O Jesus, from Your sweetest Heart my one refuge and shelter in my exile, from that Heart so full of care for me. Joy and gladness be to You from my heart and my soul, and from all the creatures of Your Hand. O God, transform me so entirely into You intense love that all my imprecation may be consumed, and that I may have no life apart from You.

Act of Consecration & Reparation

Most sweet Jesus, Fountain of Love, Father of Mercies, and God of all consolation! Who has vouchsafed to open to us, wretched and unworthy sinners, the unspeakable riches of Your Heart, I N., in thanksgiving for the innumerable favours conferred upon me and upon the rest of mankind, and especially for the institution of the most Holy Eucharist, and in order to repair all the injuries done to Your most loving Heart in this mystery of infinite love, by me and by any others whomsoever, do entirely devote myself and all that is mine, together with all the treasures of merit acquired or yet to be acquired by me with the help of Your grace, to this most Sacred Heart of Yours; promising that I will promote the worship of Your Divine Heart as far as may be in my power.

Moreover I choose in an especial manner the most Blessed Virgin Mary for my Mother, and in like manner deliver up and devote myself and all that is mine to her most pure Heart; promising that, as far as lies in me, I will promote, according to the spirit of the Church, devotion to this fond Mother, and especially to her Immaculate Conception. (Here renew your baptismal vows.)

I humbly beg, therefore, of Your infinite goodness and clemency, that You would vouchsafe to receive this holocaust in the odour of sweetness; and as You have granted me Your plentiful grace to desire and make this offering, so You will also grant me the same to enable me to fulfil it. Amen.

Act of Sorrow

O Jesus, God of my salvation, what have I done to You! O You who comes from the land of Angels, You are all majestic in Your beauty; but alas, my soul is plunged in blindness. Deign, then to be my healing and my light. O my beloved. By the innocence of Your own life, by Its holiness and purity, vouchsafe me a tender compunction of heart, that I may be ever striving to render my sins fewer.

Act of Atonement

O Jesus! Divine Saviour, deign to cast a look of mercy upon Your children, who, assembled in one same spirit of faith, reparation, and love come to deplore their own infidelities and those of all poor sinners their brethren. May we touch Your Divine Heart by the unanimous and solemn promises we are able to make, and obtain mercy for ourselves, for the world, and for all who are so unhappy as not to love You.

We all promise that for the future

R. We will console You, O Lord.

O Jesus! Divine Saviour, from Whose Heart, came forth this bitter complaint: “I looked for one that would grieve together with Me, but there was none, and for one that would comfort Me, and I found none,” graciously accept the feeble consolation we offer You, and aid us so powerfully by Your grace, that we may for the time to come shun more and more all that can displease You, and prove ourselves in everything, everywhere and for ever Your most faithful and devoted children. We ask it through You, O Lord, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Four Aspirations of love to Jesus to obtain an ardent love of God

O Jesus, most sweet, most secret, and most intimate Spouse of holy souls, inflame vehemently, my heart with the love of You, that I may delight in You from my inmost soul. Visit me in Your mercy, and fill my heart with Your grace, for the very depths of my being long for You, the fountain of sweetness.

O my Lord Jesus, O fire that burnest sweetly, and shinest secretly, and consumest gently, take full possession of my whole heart. O King of kings, King of eternal glory, grant that I may hunger and thirst for You alone, sigh after You, and ardently desire to behold Your ravishing countenance.

O amiable Jesus, pierce my heart with the sweetest dart of love ; penetrate my soul with burning charity, that it may languish altogether with desire and love of You. Let it be dissolved in love, completely melt away, and be absorbed in You.

O Lord, disengage my soul from all things here below, that it may freely tend to You alone, and You alone may inhabit it as its owner and possessor. Let Your most sweet fragrance descend upon me; let the ineffable odour of Your divine charity come to me, to excite in me incessantly all pure desires.

Grant, O my Lord, that, filled with the sweetness of Your love, and wholly set on fire with the flame of heavenly charity, I may delight in You with my whole heart, and from the deepest recesses of my inmost soul. May I love You, O sweet Lover ; may I love You, O only salvation of my soul; may I love You, for You first loved me ! O Spouse most lovely, most beloved, grant that I may love You more and more. Let the strong violence of Your love utterly dislodge from my heart the weight of all earthly desires, and make me run without ceasing in the odour of Your ointments.

O my own most compassionate Lord, write on the tablet of my heart the sweet memory of You, which no forgetfulness may ever erase, that I may ever burn with the desire of You, that I may be set on fire with the flame of Your love, and drowned in the flood of Your charity.

O my God, ocean of holy love and sweetness, come and give Yourself to my soul. Grant that with a perfect heart, full desire, and burning affection, I may ever aspire after You, and lovingly breath in You. May I prefer You to every creature, for You renounce every passing delight, O my true, my highest joy!

Feed me, Lord, Your poor, famished beggar, with continual draughts of Your divinity ; refresh me with the wished-for presence of Your grace. This I seek, this I long for, that a vehement love may penetrate me through and through, and fill me, transform me into itself.

Grant, O most benign Redeemer, that I may be wholly inflamed with the love of You, that I may disregard myself, and delight only in You, know only You, feel only You. O overflowing abyss of divinity ! Draw me to You, and immerse me in  Yourself; so seize and take to Yourself all the affection of my heart, that it may be dead to all beside.

O God of all sweetness, I call You into my soul; I cry to You, I long for You with great affection, O surpassing delight of the most intimate union ! Come, my Beloved, come, a thousand times desired, that I may inwardly possess You, and clasp You in the chaste embraces of my soul !

O Light that ever shines, and never fades, enlighten me ! O Fire that ever burns, and never fails, enkindle me ! O Love that ever grows, and never faints, absorb, transform me into You !

O dear Light of mine eyes, Jesus, chase away all darkness from the chambers of my heart, and illumine me throughout with the splendour of Your grace ! Enter into my soul, O perfect sweetness, that it may savour of sweet things, and find its joy and rest in You !

O my Beloved, only object of my vows, grant that I may find You, and finding, may keep You, and hold You fast in the arms of my soul. I long for You, I pant after You, O bliss eternal! Oh, that You would give Yourself to me, unite me intimately to You, and inebriate me with the wine of heavenly charity.

Wound, O Lord, the secret recesses of my inmost being with the arrow of Your love, and send the saving flame deep into the marrow of my cold and feeble heart ; that, all on fire with the inextinguishable flame of charity, and penetrated with the unspeakable sweetness of Your Spirit, I may be transferred from myself to You.

Receive me, O beauteous Spouse, Jesus, into the closest embraces of Your love, that, folded within, my dull, cold heart may glow through warmth. Open, Lord, open when I knock, and admit my desolate soul into the chamber of Your love, and, in Your mercy, espouse it to Yourself.

May I draw from You the living water, O Fount of deep sweetness, that by the very taste thereof I may never thirst for any thing but You. Let the heavenly dew of Your sweet-dropping charity come down upon me, that inwardly imbued therewith, I may be preserved pure from earthly desires and unchaste affections.

O dearest of all that is dear to me, grant that I may be Yours, and that You may continue mine for ever. So join, so fasten me to Yourself, that I can never be separated from You ; so give Yourself to me, that, filled with the sweetness of Your peace, I may find my chaste delight for evermore in You.

O Light serene and peaceful, O my God, irradiate my soul with Your bright beams ! Draw me closer to You, O glowing Sun, that, at Your powerful heat, the soil of my heart may bring the flowers and fruits of holy love !

O my glory, O my joy, O my unmixed delight, Jesus, kindle, I pray, such a flame of love in my inmost heart, that I may ever choose nothing, desire nothing, in the world but You !

O my Lord, let heaven and earth, and all things contained within, without Thee, be to me like a cold, wintry waste. You alone affect me, You alone delight me ; may the love of You alone live and burn within me, and continue ever living and ever burning.

Shine down upon me, O most bright and genial Light, that the thick shades of my blindness may be changed into the clear noonday splendour. O good Jesus, adorn my soul with that grace of charity which You love; anoint it with that richness of Love in which You delight. Take from it whatever is less pleasing to Your eyes, and render it in every thing acceptable to You.

O sweetest flame, devour and happily consume the very ashes of my substance ! Transfer me to Yourself, that joined to You by the indissoluble tie of love, I may live in you, and flourish before you as a lily.

O fairest, O most blooming Flower, Jesus! O Life that never fades! O Life by which I live, without which I die ! O Life by which I rejoice, without which I mourn ! O Life most sweet and amiable, grant that I may be joined to You, and, soothed to sleep in Your embrace by sweetest charity, may find my holy rest in You, our perfect peace.

Grant, O my Lord, that, filled with the violence of a burning love, and melted with the sweetness of a penetrating charity, my soul may be dissolved in You. Possess it, O sovereign, O priceless Good, possess it, that it may possess You, and find its blessed repose in You.

O my Beloved, pierce, my heart with the sharpest dart of love, that my soul may be refreshed in languishing for You. Let all passing things grow worthless in my eyes ; you only please me, You only make me glad with Your incomparable beauty.

Break down, O sweet Jesus, the hateful wall of my tepidity, and grant that, with a free and ready heart, I may follow You with inextinguishable fervour. Let blow the south wind of ardent love, which may so vehemently impel me to You, that, apart from You, there may be no breath in me.

O Jesus, only comforter of my heart, fall unceasingly upon me, I pray You, the sweet  dew of Your grace. Draw me to You by the potent virtue of Your love, and imprint upon me the kiss of Your forgiveness, that, sealed therewith, I may henceforth love nothing beside You; for You are my whole possession, and the whole blessedness of my soul.

Prayer of St Thomas Aquinas

I give You thanks, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, Eternal God, that You have vouchsafed, for no merit of my own, but of the mere condescension of Your mercy, to satisfy me, a sinner and Your unworthy servant, with the Precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. I implore You, let not this Holy Communion be to me an increase of guilt unto my punishment, but an availing plea unto pardon and forgiveness. Let it be to me the armour of faith and the shield of good will. Grant that it may work the extinction of my vices, the rooting out of concupiscence and patience, of humility and obedience. Let it be my strong defence against the snares of all my enemies, visible and invisible; the stilling and the calm of all my impulses, carnal and spiritual; my indissoluble union with You the one and true God, and a blessed consummation at my last end. And I beseech You, that You would vouchsafe to bring me, sinner as I am, to that ineffable banquet where You, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, are to Your Saints true and unfailing light, fullness of content, joy for evermore, gladness without alloy, consummate and everlasting bliss. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Prayer for England

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and our most gentle Queen and Mother, look down in mercy upon England, thy Dowry, and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee. By thee it was that Jesus, our Saviour and our hope, was given unto the world; and he has given thee to us that we might hope still more. Plead for us thy children, whom thou didst receive and accept at the foot of the cross, O sorrowful Mother, intercede for our separated brethren, that with us in the one true fold they may be united to the Chief Shepherd, the Vicar of thy Son. Pray for us all, dear Mother, that by faith, fruitful in good works, we may all deserve to see and praise God, together with thee in our heavenly home. Amen.

Dedication of England to the Mother of God

O Immaculate Virgin Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Mother of Grace, and Queen of the Kingdom of Thy Son, humbly kneeling before thee, we offer thee this country in which we live. It once was thine. Before it was robbed of the holy Faith, all its children were thy children, and thou wert honoured throughout its length and breadth as its Protectress and its Queen. Again do we consecrate it to thee; again do we dedicate it as thy own Dowry. We offer our own hearts, that their love and service may ever grow and increase. We offer all our brethren, those multitudes who know thee so little, or know thee not at all. May thy prayer bring back the country’s ancient Faith. May thy intercession lead us to a closer union with thy Divine Son. We consecrate ourselves to Him through thee. Obtain for us, and for England, thy Dowry, every grace and blessing, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O holy mother of God.

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Dedication of England to St Peter

O Blessed Prince of the Apostles, Vicar of Christ, Shepherd of the whole flock, Rock on whom the Church is built! We thank thee, Prince of Pastors, who in the ages of faith didst bind this country so sweetly and so strongly to thee, and to that holy See of Rome from which her conversion came. We praise and bless our Lord for those steadfast Confessors who laid down their lives for thy honour and prerogative, in the hour when schism and heresy broke upon the land. We desire to revive the zeal, the devotion and the love of ancient days. We consecrate our country, as far as in us lies, fervently and lovingly to thee. We offer thee our homage. We renew our loyalty to the Pontiff, thy successor, who now fills the Apostolic See. Do thou confirm and strengthen, by thy powerful intercession, the faith of the Pastors and people who invoke thee, save us from apostasy, from disunion, from religious indifference, and from the losses to which ignorance and temptation expose our little flock.

O most sincere and most humble penitent, obtain for us tears of true repentance for our sins, and a strong personal love for our Divine Master. O Key-bearer of the Heavenly Kingdom, open to us the gate of Heaven, that we may enter into the joy of the King of Glory. Remember this realm of England, which grew in grace and unity under thy blessed apostolic influence for nigh a thousand years. Pray to Jesus that all may see the and be brought back to thy Fold, which is the One Fold of Christ. Amen.

V. Thou art Peter.
R. And upon this rock I will build My Church.

Raise us up, we beseech Thee, O Lord, by the Apostolic might of Thy blessed Apostle, Peter; that the weaker we are in ourselves, the more powerful may be the assistance whereby we are strengthened through his intercession: that thus, ever fortified by the protection of Thine Apostle, we may never yield to sin nor be overwhelmed by adversity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

V. And lead us not into temptation
R. But deliver us from evil.

Let us pray.

O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament hast left us a memorial of Thy Passion; grant us, we beseech Thee, so to reverence the Sacred Mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may continually find in our souls the fruit of Thy redemption.

Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, that we, Thy servants, may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body; and by the intercession of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin, may be delivered from present sorrow and obtain eternal joy.

Almighty, everlasting God, have mercy upon Thy servant Francis, Our Sovereign Pontiff, and direct him according to Thy clemency, into the way of everlasting Salvation; that by Thy grace he may both desire those things that are pleasing to Thee, and perform them with all his strength.

O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all piety, hearken unto the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that what we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually.

Almighty, everlasting God, in Whose hand are all the powers and all the rights of Kingdoms, come to the assistance of Thy Christian people, that all pagan and heretical nations, who trust in their own violence and fraud, may be broken by the might of Thy right hand.

Almighty, everlasting God, Who hast dominion over the living and the dead, and art merciful to all whom Thou foreknowest will be Thine by faith and works; we humbly beseech Thee that they for whom we intend to pour forth our prayers, whether this present world still detain them in the flesh, or the world to come hath already received them stripped of their mortal bodies, may, by the grace of Thy loving kindness and by the intercession of all the Saints, obtain the remission of all their sins. Through Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit God for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, hear my prayer.
And let my cry come unto Thee.

May the almighty and merciful Lord graciously hear us.
And keep us for ever. Amen.

And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Pledge of future glory,

Be merciful. Spare us, O Lord.
Be merciful. Graciously hear us, O Lord.

From unworthy reception of your body and blood, deliver us, O Lord. (repeat after each line)
From the lust of the flesh,
From the lust of the eyes,
From the pride of life,
From every occasion of sin,
Through the desire, wherewith Thou didst desire to eat this Passover with Thy disciples,
Through that profound humility, wherewith Thou didst wash their feet,
Through that ardent charity, whereby Thou didst institute this divine Sacrament,
Through Thy precious Blood, which Thou hast left us on our altars,
Through the Five Wounds of this Thy most holy Body, which Thou didst receive for us,

We sinners, Beseech Thee, hear us. (repeat after each line)
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to preserve and increase our faith, reverence, and devotion towards this admirable Sacrament,
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to conduct us, through a true confession of our sins, to a frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist,
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to deliver us from all heresy, perfidy, and blindness of heart,
That Thou wouldst vouchsafe to impart to us the precious and heavenly fruits of this most Holy Sacrament,
That at the hour of death Thou wouldst strengthen and defend us by this heavenly Viaticum,
Son of God,

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, spare us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, graciously hear us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Christ, hear us.
Christ, gracious hear us.

V. Thou didst give them Bread from heaven. Alleluia.
R. Containing in itself all sweetness. Alleluia.

O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament hast left us a memorial of Thy Passion, grant, we beseech Thee, that we may so worthily reverence the sacred mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may continually find in our souls the fruit of Thy redemption. Who livest and reignest, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
